Scaling Effective Wastewater Management Solutions

Coral Reef Alliance

Approximately 80% of the world’s wastewater is discharged untreated into the ocean, threatening ecosystem integrity and human health. Global efforts to restore and protect coral reefs are being undermined by the impact of sewage pollution, threatening biodiversity and accelerating reef degradation.

Coral Reef Alliance will expand their existing efforts to reduce land-based pollution and subsequently strengthen reef resilience in key regions. These efforts include improving wastewater management, building community partnerships, and aligning conservation with local development needs. The initiative combines targeted local action with regional assessments to identify where interventions can have the greatest impact. By applying proven approaches and scaling solutions that prevent sewage from entering the ocean, the project aims to protect biodiversity, support coastal communities, and contribute to healthier, more resilient reef ecosystems across some of the world’s most critical marine areas.
