Catalysing Soil Health to Eliminate Marine Pollution

Groundswell International

Chemical intensive farming in Nepal and India’s key agricultural regions is causing severe soil degradation and nutrient runoff into the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin, contributing to pollution and oxygen depletion in the Bay of Bengal. This cycle harms both upstream farming communities and fragile marine ecosystems.

Groundswell International is working with local partners to promote agroecological practices that reduce harmful chemical use and improve soil health. Through farmer-led experimentation, training, and demonstration farms, the project supports sustainable, cost-effective farming methods that restore soil fertility and protect water quality. Emphasizing farmer-to-farmer learning and community engagement, Groundswell aims to create lasting benefits for both agricultural livelihoods and coastal marine environments in the region, as well as a sustainable model for the rest of the world’s small-scale farmers.
