Blue Climate

Blue Marine Foundation

With 2030 fast approaching and many climate targets still unmet, it is a crucial time to influence and implement climate policy. More governments must embed ocean solutions into their national climate and biodiversity strategies if we are to meet the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Paris Agreement.

Over the next two years, Blue Marine Foundation will support the UK Government to meet its 2030 targets. They will focus on raising awareness about blue carbon ecosystems through increased engagement with Defra. In particular, ensuring these ecosystems are protected and considered during marine spatial planning. They will also provide evidence to support the removal of bottom-towed fishing gear in protected areas, underscoring the damage it causes to critical carbon stores and the resulting carbon remobilisation. A process which undermines national climate targets and weakens ecosystem resilience.
