Tackling Marine Pollution from Fish Boxes

WWF Mediterranean

WWF Mediterranean aim to stop plastic leakage from single-use fish boxes in sensitive marine biodiversity and marine habitats in the Mediterranean Sea. Expanded Polystyrene (or EPS) is one of the most common components of marine litter that is found floating at sea or washed up along coastlines. It is calculated that each fish box entering the sea can break down into one million fragments of microplastics, contaminating marine habitats and species and reaching our plates. This project will identify and evaluate all possible solutions adopted at national and international levels to avoid the leakage of EPS at sea and to test the implementation of the most sustainable solution in at least one pilot fishing community in Italy.
