Reducing nitrate pollution in the Baltic Sea

BirdLife Europe

The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world primarily due to eutrophication caused by excessive loading of nutrients from agricultural activities. Now more than ever a transition to more sustainable practices is integral to the industry’s future.

To address this and building upon Phase 1 of the project, BirdLife aim to expand the use of nature-based solutions in agricultural practices in Poland and Lithuania, in order to help decrease the flow of polluting nutrients into water basins. The project will support the transition to more sustainable farming and provide ready-to-implement solutions to agricultural stakeholders and policymakers. The solutions showcased will be used as best practice examples for scaling up to EU level.
