Break Free From Plastic’s net­work of organ­i­sa­tions have devel­oped a new brand audit method­ol­o­gy for coastal waste cleanups — inves­ti­gat­ing what is the pro­por­tion of plas­tic pol­lu­tion with a dis­cernible brand iden­ti­fi­ca­tion being found on shore­lines and in urban areas. 

The Brand Audits project takes coastal cleanups to the next lev­el – by adding brand iden­ti­fi­ca­tion mech­a­nisms to local cleanups around the world and stan­dar­d­is­ing the col­lec­tion of the resul­tant data, to pro­duce a sound report on the impact of brand pack­ag­ing choic­es on world­wide plas­tic pol­lu­tion. With more advanced scan­ning and labelling method­olo­gies of the recov­ered waste, BFFP can deter­mine which com­pa­nies should be held account­able for plas­tic pol­lu­tion end­ing up in our ocean, and demand cor­po­rate action and responsibility.
