Securing the future of Ireland’s seabirds

BirdLife Europe

Ireland’s waters represent 8% of the EU’s marine area. They hold many species of conservation importance, including 24 species of seabirds. However, Ireland’s Marine Protected Areas (MPA) network is severely lacking – currently, it is one of only three member states who have designated less than 1% of their waters as special protected areas.

BirdLife Europe aims to drive forward the designation and effective management of marine protected areas covering the most important sites for seabirds in Irish seas, securing the future for Ireland’s internationally important seabird populations and other marine species, and contributing to the effective protection and restoration of seas in the EU.
