Preventing Marine Geoengineering Risks
Hands Off Mother Earth Alliance
Marine geoengineering (mGE) is a set of large-scale technological interventions in the ocean aimed at altering the climate. As mGE gains momentum among governments and the private sector, especially in the Global North, the Hands Off Mother Earth (HOME) Alliance is working to ensure that these high-risk, dangerous proposals are met with informed resistance. Techniques such as ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, and marine cloud brightening are being promoted as climate solutions, often without transparency or the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) of affected communities. These interventions risk causing further damage to marine ecosystems and communities while diverting attention and resources from genuine, rights-based climate solutions.
This project enhances HOME Alliance’s global efforts to monitor, challenge, resist, and raise awareness about marine geoengineering. Through international advocacy, capacity building and enhancement, grassroots communities’ engagement, and visual storytelling, the HOME Alliance supports frontline communities, elevates Indigenous leadership, and advocates for precautionary governance grounded in justice. From community workshops to media toolkits, the initiative unites civil society voices to expose risks, oppose dangerous distraction, and demand accountability at every level where decisions on geoengineering are made.
